KANTO · Route 1

Route 1 – Pokémon & Locations

Route 1 is your first step out of Pallet Town: short, calm and trainer-free. The grass holds just two species, but both matter for your run: Pidgey as an early Flying sweeper, Rattata as a solid Normal attacker. Grab your first catch, pick up the free Potion from the Poké Mart clerk and head on to Viridian City. All rates are from FireRed/LeafGreen, identical in both versions.

CALCULATED TIP

Best catch on Route 1

Pidgey — Gen V (2010) sprite

Pidgey (50%, Lv 2–5) evolves through Pidgeotto (Lv 18) into Pidgeot (Lv 36), one of the strongest early evolution lines in FireRed/LeafGreen. As a Normal/Flying type it is immune to Ground, strong against Bug and Grass teams (Viridian Forest, Erika's gym) and later a reliable carrier for HM02 Fly. Rattata is the backup plan: strong early as Raticate (Lv 20), but without the Flying utility.

Log encounter

Route 1 is the first encounter route of almost every Kanto run: whatever walks into your grass here is your first catch. The dupes clause applies from this point on. Log it in the tracker right away before you move on to Viridian.

Q&A

In FireRed/LeafGreen, just two species: Pidgey and Rattata. Both appear in the grass at a 50% rate each – Pidgey at Lv 2–5, Rattata at Lv 2–4. The FR/LG table is identical, and there are no trainers on Route 1. HeartGold/SoulSilver adds extra species (Sentret, Hoothoot) in the version toggle.

Yes – Pidgey is one of the best early catches in FRLG. The line through Pidgeotto (Lv 18) into Pidgeot (Lv 36) delivers strong early stats and useful Flying coverage against Bug, Grass and Fighting. On top of that, Pidgeot is a natural carrier for HM02 Fly later on. If you prefer something more grounded, Rattata is a solid Normal attacker with an early evolution (Lv 20).

Yes, exactly one: a Potion. The clerk from the Viridian City Poké Mart stands on the route and hands out a free sample. There are no hidden or purchasable items on Route 1.

No – there is no version difference on Route 1. Pidgey and Rattata have identical rates (50% each) and level ranges in both versions. Version-exclusive Pokémon like Growlithe (FR only) or Staryu (LG only) only matter on later routes.

Pidgey – because of its evolution line and Flying utility. With a 50% encounter rate you have good odds of seeing it as your first encounter. Pidgeot carries you through the early game and stays useful as a Fly carrier. Rattata/Raticate is the workable alternative with an early power spike (Lv 20).
