Life Orb boosts every move its holder uses but costs HP on each attack. It comes from Generation 4 and is considered the most flexible offensive item because you keep full freedom of move choice.
What does the item do?
Holder’s moves inflict 30% extra damage, but cost 10% max HP per attack. An item to be held by a Pokémon. It boosts the power of moves but at the cost of some HP on each hit.

+30% damage on every move, minus 10% of max HP per attack. The HP cost only applies to damaging moves; status moves are free. The boost covers physical and special moves alike. In rough numbers the holder survives about ten of its own attacks without healing. A missed move costs nothing. Compared to Choice Band: less power, full freedom to switch moves.
Our Kanto dataset (FireRed/LeafGreen) has no recorded location for Life Orb. Life Orb arrived with Generation 4 and does not exist in FireRed/LeafGreen.
The best all-rounder among offensive items. In versus matches, Life Orb is standard on mixed attackers and setup sweepers because it strengthens every move in the set. In a story run the HP loss is noticeable if you rarely heal. If you do not need the 30%, Leftovers is the calmer pick.
