ITEM DEX

Exp. Share

Exp. Share

DE: EP-Teiler

Exp. Share spreads experience points across your whole team, even to Pokémon that never entered the battle. In FireRed/LeafGreen it is a held item handed to you on Route 15. It is the easiest way to keep weaker team members at a usable level.

EFFECT

What does the item do?

Half the Exp. Points from a battle are split between Pokémon holding this item. An item to be held by a POKéMON. The holder gets a share of EXP. points without having to battle.

Effect numbers are modern rules. FRLG may differ. See Q&A.

Q&A

50% of battle experience goes to the holders, the rest to the battlers. In Generation 3 the math works like this: half the Exp. Points are split evenly between every Pokémon holding an Exp. Share, the other half between the Pokémon that actually fought. If your starter battles while a bench Pokémon holds the item, both get half. The holder never has to see the fight and takes no damage. The only real cost is the held-item slot. From Generation 6 onward, Exp. Share is a key item that covers the whole team automatically.

In FireRed/LeafGreen you can find Exp. Share here: Route 15. The gate stands east of Fuchsia City, and Prof. Oak's aide waits on the second floor. The requirement is 50 caught species in the Pokédex. If you have been catching regularly on the way to Fuchsia, you are usually already past that mark.

Worth a slot in every story run. Exp. Share shines in Nuzlocke runs because replacements from the box catch up without grinding. Modern games turn it on for the whole team by default; FireRed/LeafGreen makes you spend a held-item slot on it. Before the Pokémon League at the latest, it pays to bring the full team up to gym-leader level.
