Everstone

Everstone is a held item that stops its holder from evolving. It is useful when a Pokémon should stay unevolved, and it plays a role in breeding. In FireRed/LeafGreen you receive it on Route 10.
What does the item do?
Prevents the holder from evolving. An item to be held by a Pokémon. A Pokémon holding this peculiar stone is prevented from evolving.

Blocks every evolution of the holder for as long as it is held. The block covers level-up and trade evolutions, but not stones: a Fire Stone still works through an Everstone. Breeding adds a second use. Since Emerald, a parent holding it passes down its Nature with a 50% chance; from Black 2/White 2 onward the pass-down is guaranteed. In battle itself the stone does nothing.
In FireRed/LeafGreen you can find Everstone here: Route 10. Prof. Oak's aide waits in the Pokémon Center on Route 10 at the entrance to Rock Tunnel. The requirement is 20 caught species in the Pokédex, which you usually have by then.
A niche item, exactly right in two cases. Case one: you want a Pokémon to stay unevolved, for example because it learns certain moves earlier. Case two: breeding with Nature inheritance. The stone contributes nothing in battle, so the slot is a deliberate choice. On a normal run it can stay in the bag.
